Romans 16 - Spark to Blaze

Apple Orchard Falls

I love Paul’s conclusion here.  In just a few sentences Paul recognizes, commends, and encourages over 30 brothers and sisters in Christ.  From the lightning bolt of faith that hit him on the road to Damascus, Paul’s impact even at this early stage of the Church, was immeasurable.

As God did with Moses and Aaron, He still commissions flawed men to go on great adventures of faith.  Like Paul, we should encourage each other, “all glory to God, who can make you strong” (16:25).  Indeed.  It is all about Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God.  May we hear, believe, and obey today.

Paul reminds us of the impact of these many early Saints.  They had already turned the world upside down for Good through their faith in Jesus.  Earlier in Romans Paul speaks of taking delight in honoring fellow believers (13:10).  And he does just that here.

Paul tells us to always assess what we are being taught and to assess the impact of the teachers.  In Paul’s conclusion, he warns us not to blame the sheep, the innocent people deceived by those serving their own personal interests.  Instead, blame the wolves, the wicked men intent on gaining and getting, with no fear or shame.

We must stay away from those who cause divisions, upset, or unsettle genuine faith and serve their own personal interests.  It seems our leadership is chock-full of these men today.  Maybe that's always been the case.  Regardless, let’s follow God’s instruction to stay away from such wicked men (16:17).  And let’s trust God when He says, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (16:20).  I believe that.

Oh, Lord God, please build up men and women of faith who really love you and who serve not for earthly gain or possession, but who serve the Master, Christ Jesus.

Lord Jesus, we know you love us and that you have a good path for us by your plan and purposes.  May we follow it with Your guidance today.  Amen.
