Hebrews 6 - Our Strong Anchor - Jesus Christ

Storms will come.  Raging winds.  Rough seas.  High, battering waves.  Without a strong anchor, we will drift away - out to sea.  Don’t take my word for it - take God’s.

The strong anchor for our souls is Jesus Christ.  God’s promise and the certainty of His oath is trustworthy.  We can trust God who holds our souls, loves us, and seeks the best for us, now and in eternity.  No matter what or who comes at us we must increase our faith in God and yearn for more spiritual understanding and effectiveness.  We grow so that we are more useful to God.

Be wary of those who say all you need is a cheap ticket to get into heaven, you can have an easy street now.  Those same tickling pastors say there is no need to bear good fruit for God’s blessing.  But what does Hebrews 6 say?  People can and do drift away after they have experienced the good things of God and “shared in the Holy Spirit” (6:4).  God can't lie.  He gives us this warning to encourage us to keep growing and maturing.  And to gain more confidence in Jesus.  He is the One who represents and ministers to us (6:20).  The Son is our Anchor, Saviour, and High Priest.

So, boys and girls, men and women of the church.  We must grow up.  Have you ever heard of churches that never grow up?  Lukewarm churches, lukewarm Christians.  Boastful, shameful, spiritually dead congregations.  Every message is the same; there is no care for spiritual maturity, no remorse for sin, and little reverence for God.  Hebrews tell us to move from the basics (not because anyone is too good for the basics but because of the eternal importance of growing) and to move to deeper understanding and more faith in Jesus (6:3).

We must follow the example of our Rescuer - he learned obedience from the things he suffered (5:8).  Jesus is the source of salvation for all those who obey him (5:9).  But this next chapter tells of the importance of bearing fruit for God (sounds like the Book of James, doesn’t it!).  Growth and good conduct matter.  That's what we are taught in this passage.  6:8 says, “But if a field bears thorns and thistles, it is useless.  The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn it.”

Jesus is our example.  He showed us how to lead others and serve and care for people.  I'm confident that the Church is growing and is on the cusp of revival.  We will indeed increase our desire to love and “care for other believers” (6:10).  Find a way to show your love today.  Let's do something kind and loving.

Lord Jesus, please increase our faith and trust in you today.  Help us to grow in the things that have eternal significance.  We know that You are a trustworthy anchor for our souls.  Amen.

Every ship needs an anchor.  So too do we.  (My brother James strumming a few tunes off Vancouver Island.)
