2 Corinthians 1:23-24 - Mentoring

With Sam, Barcelona

Mentor well.  You’d be surprised at how many people we can influence.  There are some, however, that God allows us to indeed encourage; nay, to make disciples of Christ.

God is our witness.  He is our audience.  His approval is what ultimately matters.  We should act like Paul and lead with grace.  There is a time and a place for a rebuke and a time for mercy and forgiveness.  Our culture in the church must not be one of dominating each other.  Do you see signs of that?  Are there boss men in your organization lording their power over others?  Do you have a culture of mentoring, servant leadership, and actively making disciples of Christ?  Are your women teaching the young women well and showing them by example how to be servant leaders?  What about the older men, are they stepping up and showing the men how they watch for God at every step, taking initiative without hesitation; yet showing patience and humility rather than selfish ambition?

God is not a micromanager.  Or a dominator.  Or a control freak.  That’s not His style, His character.  He’s far too wise for that.  Far too strong.  Weak men are legalists.  Listen to the Bible, “We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm” (v.24).  Amen!  And Amen!  Let’s be that kind of leader.  One who works alongside others and serves and helps others grow.

Each man and woman of God has faith and trust in Jesus.  I cannot have confidence in Christ for you nor you for me.  But we can help each other, support and encourage each other so that we are full of joy as we grow in trust in Jesus Christ and His promised return.

Help us Lord Jesus grow in maturity as men and women who do not dominate but work with and serve others well.  Thank you, Lord God.  Amen.
