1 Corinthians 9:1-16 - The Sacred Trust

We are free men and women.  We have no earthly master.  The Holy Spirit lives in us.  We are compelled to obey the law of Christ.

This means we focus not on our rights but on our responsibility.  Yes, we have rights and we have freedom.  But we are not selfish me-first people.  We simply can’t be if Christ lives in us.  We see in this chapter that spreading the Good News is a blessing.  The finish line is heaven; the prize is eternal.

We will not abuse people or take advantage of them.  We overlook wrongs and endure all sorts of offenses, from petty grievances to serious injury.

But why?  Why does the Christian man not take all he can get?  Why stop at so much gain when more is readily available?  Because God gives us one life, one opportunity to bring many to Christ.  One shot.  This is the sacred trust.  Yes, but it is so much more than a burdensome responsibility.  It is the good life.  The rich, rewarding life - full of adventure, challenge, set back, satisfaction, happiness, second chances, and joy.  We live this God-compelled life in service to others with the friendship of Jesus Christ - the Man and the God - the Ancient of Days.  Abraham’s friend.  The Creator.  The infinite Judge.  The all-powerful Healer.  The One who rescues sinners from this evil world.  He is the Giver of all good gifts.  And as we live and trust in Jesus as our God he will provide everything we need.  He also guides us to know when to exercise rights and when to forego them as we fulfill the sacred trust.

        Lord, guide me I pray.

God rewards us with the opportunity to do what He compels us to do.  We can’t boast about it and should count the pay the blessing of obedience to our faithful and loving God.  I am thankful Paul honored and fulfilled the sacred trust God gave him.

Please allow us Lord God to do what you compel us to do.  Amen.
