 Acts 5:11-16

 


         We’re scared today. Feeble. But unlike the Acts church, we have great fear for the wrong reasons. Instead of the awe of God gripping us, we are ashamed to be servants of Christ. We pretend and deceive ourselves – and we waste time and boatloads of money on useless man-made programs.

         Peter and John and the believers who saw the risen Jesus were bold and courageous. They asked God to give them great boldness in preaching His word (4:29). And they asked God to stretch out his hand with healing power for miraculous signs and wonders through the name of Holy Jesus. And God answered that prayer. The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. People will come to the Lord if we act with courage and boldness. Jesus will still cure any sickness or evil spirit-possessed person today. He’s Almighty God. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

         Almighty God, we are gripped in awe of you today. We fear you, for you are Good, Holy, and Just. You see our motives, and you know our hearts. Lord Jesus, please increase our faith in you. May we please you through our obedience and our unity in godliness. Help us do many miracles and wonders through your hand – for your Cause – so many men are drawn to you and believe. Amen.

 John 2:13-25 - Beer with Vance or Brunch with Baker           The church is desperate for authenticity, and genuine Christ followers.  Americans are desperate for good leaders, those who lead selflessly with hard work, intelligence, and grit.  We are sick of being lied to and sick of the hypocrisy.  It’s the same in the church.  The good news is that God shows us the way to authenticity and how to be good leaders.           I heard a local pastor a few years ago tell the congregation that if they ever see him drinking alcohol in a restaurant they should call for his resignation.  I too am for moderation and I have no problem with those who don't drink.  Good, great actually.  Yet the same legalists who preach legalistic messages are sometimes gorging themselves at the buffet and care nothing of transparency and living above reproach.  We all need to walk the walk.    ...
